… The Tartufo  Gelato was born in 1943, when Prince Umberto of Savoia went in a small town in Calabria (Pizzo Calabro) to conduct a military inspection. The Calabresi honored him with a feast showcasing the foods of Calabria. The Prince was suitably impressed with the bounty of this region on the shoelaces of the Italian boot.

After a very rich dinner, Prince Umberto tasted his first Tartufo Gelato and he was stunned into an ecstatic silence. Then he said ”I could not imagine that a dessert could become the most memorable part of my meal!”.

From that day the Maestri Gelati of Calabria have been making their Tartufi for fortunate locals and for pleasantly surprised tourists …
